Senior Backend Engineer
Own the services that route millions of customer conversations a month — from message ingestion to AI orchestration.
About the role
Engium powers customer conversations for thousands of small businesses across WhatsApp, voice, and web. As a Senior Backend Engineer you will own end-to-end services that ingest messages, run our 3-tier AI pipeline, and push responses back to customers — usually in under 800ms.
What you'll do
- Design and ship async, multi-tenant services in Python (FastAPI) and PostgreSQL.
- Own one of: conversation engine, integrations (Meta / Twilio / Exotel), or billing & usage.
- Drive technical decisions: API shape, schema changes, performance budgets, on-call playbooks.
- Pair with product and design to scope work that ships in days, not quarters.
- Mentor mid-level engineers and review code with care.
What we're looking fo
- 5+ years building production backend systems, ideally in Python or a similar typed-async stack.
- Comfortable with Postgres at scale — query plans, indexes, migrations, and the occasional pg_stat dive.
- Strong async / concurrency instincts. You know when to use a queue, when to use a lock, and when to do neither.
- You write tests because they help you ship, not because someone told you to.
- Clear written communicator. You can RFC an idea before you build it.
Bonus points
- Experience with LLM-backed products (RAG, function calling, evals).
- Worked on telephony or messaging providers (Twilio, Meta Cloud API, RCS).
- Multi-tenant SaaS or platform-engineering background.

Compensation
$140k – $190k base + equity
Adjusted for region. Same band globally for the same level.

You will join the Platform team — six engineers spread across three timezones. We ship every day, run a light on-call rotation, and protect deep-work blocks.
